Global Technology — Empowered Ownership

Pushing decision rights down inside a global technology manufacturer so the people closest to the work could actually move.

Context

A global technology manufacturer where ownership of operational decisions had quietly centralised over several years, as risk management added layers of sign-off that no single decision had introduced but all together had made the organisation slow.

Challenge

Managers at the operational layer knew what to do and no longer felt empowered to do it without triangulating with three functions and two levels. Decisions that should have been one-day calls were two-week processes.

Approach

We worked with the executive team to redraw the decision rights explicitly: for each class of operational decision, a named role could decide; others would be informed. The sign-off chains were not revised — they were dismantled where the data did not justify them.

What shifted

Decision velocity at the operational layer increased markedly. The feared quality drop did not materialise, because the empowered managers were the ones who already knew the context. Executive time freed up to focus on genuinely cross-cutting calls.

What shifted: the organisation stopped punishing managers for using judgement.
